Francesca Owoo, Ph.D

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Mental Health Counselor

My clients usually call me Dr. O or Dr. Fran. My background spans over 15 years of working with marginalized communities in various settings, including psychiatric and medical facilities, community mental health agencies, university clinics, group private practices, and schools.

I hail from the South Bronx (🎶South South Bronx🎶), where I was born and raised, to immigrant parents from Ghana, West Africa. Let me stop you before you even ask, no I do not speak Twi and yes, I am bicultural.

Growing up, I witnessed how family and couple dynamics can change when a loved one faces illness. My own family has dealt with the challenges of chronic conditions like sickle cell disease and cancer.

During my doctoral journey, I faced my own health battles – diagnosed with fibroids, stage 4 endometriosis, and adenomyosis, leading to multiple surgeries. These personal experiences with chronic illness and caregiving have fueled my dedication to helping couples, families, and individuals facing adversity.

“What makes you different from others?”

Being a licensed mental health professional and a virtual couples therapist with a unique blend of Ghanaian-American heritage and a Bronx upbringing, I bring a family-centered perspective to support both couples and families. My expertise lies in a holistic approach and systemic-based therapies like Intergenerational Family Therapy and Belief System Analysis. I’m here to guide you through various challenges, whether it’s burnout, depression, anxiety, chronic illness, relationship issues, or finding that elusive work-life balance.

Now, you might be wondering how this approach works if you’re seeking individual counseling. Well, systemic-based therapies have a special twist. They focus on unraveling the intricate web of relationships between individuals and their surroundings.

In our sessions, we’ll dive into the roles and developmental dynamics within your couple/family unit. This exploration will shed light on how your family history has left its mark on your emotional and mental well-being, core beliefs, and self-esteem. Understanding the influence of past generations on your stress management, social interactions, and self-perception is KEY.

Let's work together if:

You’re motivated and ready to make positive changes in your life.

You recognize the potential for transformation through therapy.

You’re excited about the journey of selfdiscovery and selflove.

You’re looking for practical techniques to improve your relationships.

You’re open to stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing challenges.

You want to learn how to set and maintain healthy boundaries in your relationships.

You seek balance between cultural or family expectations and your personal values.

You’re dedicated to investing at least 3-6 months in the therapeutic process.

You’re in search of an experienced therapist who blends expertise with a sense of humor.
